Description

The Director of Congregational Engagement is accountable for developing a culture of welcoming, connecting, growing, and celebrating so every member can effectively engage and connect to church life, stewardship, and active ministry. This position will promote connection by partnering with members to discover their gifts and to equip them to faithfully use their time, talent, and resources in service to God and the faith community at large. The Director will work closely with the Discipleship and Stewardship Ministry committees, pastors, and church staff to design and to implement First Presbyterian’s strategic goals specific to congregational engagement. The Director will resource the Finance Committee with information and updates to ensure open and frequent communication between the Discipleship, Stewardship and Finance Committees.

This is a three-year, grant funded full-time position with generous benefits. The goal is for this position to increase engagement and financial giving commensurate with the salary and benefit costs so that the position will continue beyond the three-year term.

Working Sundays is required as well as several evening meetings each month. The work week would consist of Sunday through Thursday with flexibility offered for hours worked on days when attending an evening meeting is required.

Duties

PROGRAM LEADERSHIP (50%)
• Develop strategies to impact culture change by engaging and connecting all members in church life and active ministry, and integrating engagement, connection, and generosity into the work of pastors, staff, and members.
• Design and lead visitor and new member programs that are: 1) clear about membership expectations 2) provide specific pathways to facilitate involvement and 3) exhibit tangible success through data that show the number of new members giving, number of new members involved, and number of visitors contacted.
• Create a welcoming process that uses high touch (interviews, connection opportunities) and technology to illustrate a warm and welcoming congregation.
• Develop a gifts identification and utilization process that promotes discernment and sustains a church-wide effort to identify individual spiritual gifts. Using data and specific member segmentation, develop programs to educate and engage members for individual stewardship, major gift opportunities, and Paisley Society. The process will support members by matching or developing their gifts for ministries and giving within and/or outside of FPC.
• Design and lead training for staff, pastors, and members to understand new membership and engagement program so each role understands how they can assimilate and engage new and existing members.
• Create sustainable events and/or opportunities to affirm, celebrate, and thank members who are using their gifts and introduce engagement opportunities to visitors and members unfamiliar with ministry options to serve and give.
• Provide and maintain a process that ensures the engagement strategies and outcomes are fulfilling the mission and nurturing members.

BUILDING CONNECTIONS (30%)
• Participate actively as a member of the church’s ministry staff, including regular attendance at meetings.
• Serve as staff lead with the discipleship committee ministry in their work to welcome visitors and integrate new members to FPC.
• Attend Stewardship and Generosity committee and assist in growing members’ and visitors’ engagement in church activities and financial giving.
• Support and partner with appropriate ministry teams to design church-wide events that build community and foster connections. (affinity groups, coffee hour, lunch with a pastor, picnics, dinner groups, etc.)
• Provide support, when needed, to Nominating Committee, Appointments Committee, and other ministry areas seeking members with specific skills and interests.

DATA COLLECTION AND OUTCOMES (20%)
• Accountable for creating a proactive, sustainable process for accurate membership rolls, including attendance, giving, and life events (birth, death, marriage, etc.).
• Establish and maintain an evaluation process that tracks new and existing members integration, assimilation, giving, and retention within FPC.
• Provide data on a scheduled basis to the Session and Senior Pastor on engagement and generosity actions and outcomes.

Qualifications

REQUIRED

Education: Bachelor’s degree

Experience: 4 years of demonstrated success in developing and executing engagement programs that lead to active participation of members, and increased giving for annual pledges and gifts and other stewardship campaigns.

Spirituality: Evidence of personal discipleship and a committed follower of Christ.

• High degree of emotional intelligence and flexibility in a fast paced and dynamic culture composed of people from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences.
• Demonstrated ability to organize, initiate, delegate, and manage multiple priorities, and adjust timelines as conditions change.
• Strong interpersonal skills, excellent listening skills, and demonstrated ability to clearly and effectively communicate through spoken, written, and electronic means.
• Demonstrated skills in working with staff and members to ensure work is moving forward and aligned with strategic objectives.
• Skillful and confident when presenting data and information to multiple audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team to promote collegiality and produce results.
• Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and calm competence during high stress situations.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and electronic mail functions.
• Proficiency with various forms of digital communication.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Self-motivated.

PREFERRED
• Knowledge of strategic communications and marketing.

• Experience working in a faith-based organization. Comfortable using church membership database.

• Executive Certificate in Religious Fundraising.
