Description
The Cook will efficiently prepare and cook food for the shelter and community. There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this role.
Duties
- Prepares batches of food that are cooked to order or kept warm until serving of meals; this may include such food items as hamburgers or fried chicken.
- Operates large-volume cooking equipment such as the grill, microwave, and ovens.
- Prepares, washes, and cuts food to be cooked.
- Multitasks by cooking several different dishes, ensuring that all items are prepared in a safe and healthy manner.
- Maintains overall sanitation, health, cleanliness, and safety standards for food preparation areas, cooking services, and dishes and utensils.
- Works with volunteers, churches, civic, or other organizations that are preparing and/or serving meals in the kitchen.
- Assist In-Kind coordinator or program specialist in sorting of food to coolers, freezers, and dry storage.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Skills/Abilities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic understanding of or ability to learn basic sanitation and regulations for workplace safety.
- Basic understanding of or ability to learn food-handling techniques, preparation, and cooking procedures.
- Ability to work efficiently and quickly.
- Must be able to work well as part of a team.
- Must be able to work well under pressure.
- Ability to maintain personal cleanliness.
Education and Experience
- High school or vocational school coursework in kitchen basics, such as food safety, preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to be able to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to be able to lift to 15 pounds at times.
