Board Chair Roundtable: Budgeting, Fundraising Benchmarks and Strategies

Without a strong fundraising culture, nonprofits often lurch from one financial crisis to another.*

What’s the fundraising culture in your organization?  How did it evolve and how is it sustained?  Recession, local and federal elections or changing priorities for foundations can turn fundraising expectations upside down overnight.  Suddenly, doing what you’ve always done, isn’t working.  How does a Board of Directors help prepare for sudden changes in cashflow?  Developing benchmark indicators with the Executive can help a Board track the financial health of the nonprofit.  Ultimately, changes in funding patterns impact services and programs so the accountable Board has to have the information to evaluate which programs to keep and which to change or dissolve.
